I am sitting with Haile Gebrselassie in a room near his home in the suburbs of Addis Ababa trying to keep my mind on my job. This is, after all, a sports interview. And I am, after all, a sports writer. And he is, after all, the greatest distance runner the world has ever seen. And yet, every time the conversation drifts towards his running and records, I have to stifle the urge to yawn.
Should I consider changing my job? The problem starts the moment we shake hands. He has dashed to the interview from his niece’s wedding on the other side of the city and seems mortified to have kept me waiting. “I’m so sorry,” he gushes. “The value of time is not what it should be in this country. We started at one and I was sure it would finish before 2.30. This is bad for you.”
